5G vs. 4G

Mobile Vikings uses the Proximus network, which means Vikings can also enjoy 5G. But what exactly is the difference with 4G?

  • Lightning fast: Up to 1 Gbps, a major upgrade from the 110 Mbps you get with 4G.

  • Greener & smarter: 5G uses up to 90% less energy per GB. Great for your data and the planet!

  • Instant downloads: Download a 1 GB movie in just 8 seconds? Easy peasy.

In short: super fast internet, a smooth connection, and always ready to go. The map below shows your estimated network coverage based on the location you set.

What affects network speed?

Network

The speed of your mobile data connection depends on the type of network you're connected to. The icon on your phone screen shows which connection is active, like 4G or 5G. With the phase-out of 3G, there's now more room to strengthen and expand the 4G and 5G networks.

Device

Not every device reaches the same speed. Older phones or tablets often don’t support the highest internet speeds. Want to browse using 5G? Then you’ll need a device that can handle it. Check here to see if your device is 5G-ready.

Location

The location where you use your phone has a big impact on your internet speed. The farther you are from a cell tower, the weaker the signal.

Indoors, your speed can drop because of concrete walls and ceilings, especially in newly built homes. That’s why you might experience lower speeds even in areas with full coverage. Obstacles like apartment buildings, office buildings and trees can also interfere with your connection.

Number of users

Network congestion can also affect your internet speed. Each cell tower has a maximum capacity, so the more people using it, the slower the connection can get. The 5G network does have a higher capacity, so during busy times you're likely to experience less speed loss compared to other networks.

Movement

When you are moving from one cell tower to another, like in a car or on a train, your internet speed may drop.

Your device constantly has to switch between towers, which can temporarily weaken the signal and slow down your connection.

Services

The speed you experience also depends on the apps and websites you use. A busy website may load more slowly, no matter how fast your internet connection is. Some apps use more data and can put more strain on your connection, which may impact overall performance.

Calls & call forwarding

You can activate a second incoming call by dialing *43#. To deactivate it, dial #43#. If the codes don’t work, try adding an extra * or # at the beginning of the code.

You can activate call forwarding via your phone’s settings or by entering the following codes. Replace the number +32456191933 with the number you want to forward calls to when entering the code on your mobile phone.

  • Always: (*)*21*+32456191933# + call

  • If I don’t answer: (*)*61*+32456191933# + call

  • If I’m on another call: (*)*67*+32456191933# + bellen

  • If there is no network or my device is turned off: (*)*62*+32456191933# + call

(*) That means you need to enter two asterisks for some devices.

Do you want to cancel call forwarding? Then dial and call ##61#, ##62#, and ##67#. Note: this will also disable your voicemail. Make sure to set up your voicemail again, read here how to do it.

A call that is forwarded from one Belgian Mobile Vikings number to another is charged at the standard call rate. If you forward to an international number, the international rate applies. You can find that rate on our roaming page.

You can choose after how many seconds your voicemail becomes active. You can choose between 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 seconds:

  • To activate your voicemail after 30 seconds of ringing, dial (*)61+32456191933**30# and press 'call';

  • To activate your voicemail after 25 seconds of ringing, dial (*)61+32456191933**25# and press 'call';

  • …

( * ) That means you need to enter two asterisks for some devices.

Or you can adjust this yourself in your My Viking account under the product settings of your number.

Spam calls are a nuisance, but luckily they’re often easy to recognize:

  • You receive a call from an unknown international number.

  • Sometimes it looks like a local number (e.g. starting with ‘02’ for Brussels), but that can be fake.

  • You hear a robotic voice speaking in broken Dutch or English.

  • They ask for personal information.

Be careful with spoofing as well. That’s when scammers pretend to be someone else, even using a number you recognize! Here are a few tips to avoid falling for it:

  • Do not answer calls from unknown numbers.

  • Never share personal information, such as passwords or account numbers.

  • Are you asked to say “yes” or “no”? Hang up.

  • Be alert if you feel pressured to give information quickly.

Not sure? Call the company or organization back yourself. Sign up for the 'Do Not Call' list to avoid being bothered again!

Frequently asked questions

You can surf on 5G if you meet these 3 conditions:

  • You need a mobile plan of at least € 15. Mobile subscriptions lower than €15 and top-up cards do not include 5G.
In your My Viking account, you can easily switch to a mobile subscription that includes 5G.
You won't pay any additional charge beyond the fixed price of your subscription to use 5G.

  • Your device must support 5G. You can check here if your device is compatible with 5G.

  • You are in a 5G area. If 5G is not available at your location, your device will automatically switch to the best available network. You can use our coverage map to see where you can currently surf on 5G.

What do I need to surf using 5G?

No worries. Your phone uses the same amount of data on the 5G network as it does on 4G. The amount of data needed depends on the apps you use, not the network you are connected to.

Some apps automatically adjust the video quality based on the available network, which can result in higher data usage. For example, if you are watching a series or movie on Netflix using the 5G network, the app may stream in 4K to give you the best possible experience.

Does 5G use more data than 4G?
