Which subscription is best for your kids?

At some point, your child will ask for their first smartphone. But should you choose a prepaid SIM card or a subscription? And what about the budget? We’ll guide you through all the options, so you can confidently choose the right plan for your son or daughter.

Whether you go for a subscription or a prepaid SIM card, as a parent or guardian of a minor, you’ll be the one to conclude the contract. Through your My Viking account, you can keep full control: track usage, set limits, receive notifications, or adjust the price plan. All in one place.

Option 1: A prepaid SIM card

A prepaid SIM card is a popular first price plan for young smartphone users. You decide how much credit to put on the SIM card. And when it’s gone, it’s gone. No surprises, no unforeseen costs.

Did you know that with every prepaid plan, you can choose between ‘More data’ or More calls’? Handy, because you know best what your child needs.

When you choose a € 15 top-up, you get € 15 of calling credit plus a bundle with mobile data, calling minutes, and unlimited texts.

When that bundle expires or runs out, you can still call, text, or surf at the regular prepaid rate as long as you have calling credit left. Once your credit is gone, you’ll need to top up again.

Another advantage: you can use your calling credit to buy bus and tram tickets from De Lijn. The cost is simply deducted from your balance. For TEC and STIB, it doesn’t work the same way.

To recap

  • Starting from € 10: you decide the budget
  • Choose between ‘More data’ or ‘More calls’
  • Switch easily to another price plan with every top-up
  • Pay bus tickets with your calling credit
  • Avoid unexpected extra costs

Option 2: A subscription

A mobile subscription gives you the most value for your money. For the same amount, you get more mobile data and calling minutes than with a prepaid SIM card.

Your bundle renews automatically every month: no manual top-ups needed. At the end of each month, you’ll receive an invoice. In just a few clicks, you can even set up automatic payments.

If you choose a € 25 per month subscription, you go unlimited. Really. You’ll have an active bundle with unlimited data, unlimited calls, and unlimited texts. Hello, peace of mind!

With a subscription, you can incur out-of-bundle costs, for example for extra usage, bus tickets, or international calls.

Pro tip: team up with your child in a Viking Clan. Everyone in your Clan gets extra data on top of their plan every month: +2 GB with two Vikings, +3 GB with three, +4 GB with four. Easy bonus!

If you choose a € 15 subscription, you get an active bundle with 30 GB of mobile data and unlimited calls and texts. If you use more than 30 GB within that month, you’ll go over your bundle and extra costs will be charged. To avoid extra costs, you can even start your next month early with your Mobile Vikings subscription.

to recap

  • Subscriptions from just € 10 per month
  • Your bundles renew automatically each month
  • Get the most out of your budget
  • Free extra data every month with your Viking Clan

Option 3: A prepaid SIM card with mobile data only

Is your kid all about watching videos, gaming, and chatting? Then the Data Only rate plan is the best fit. For € 15 you get 8 GB of mobile data: perfect for hours on TikTok and YouTube, and plenty of video chats.

This prepaid SIM card doesn’t include calls or texts, only mobile data. It’s ideal for young users who prefer WhatsApp or Snapchat to communicate.

Your child can still make traditional calls to emergency and other free numbers, and can receive calls from anyone. You always call your child for free, just like all other Vikings.

To recap

  • Lots of mobile data at a great price
  • You decide the budget
  • Ditch traditional calls: call via apps or receive calls instead
  • Avoid unexpected extra costs
  • Not possible: buying De Lijn bus tickets with calling credit

the best choice

Ready to decide? For your child’s first SIM card, we recommend a prepaid SIM card with € 10 top-ups. Got a die-hard TikTok or YouTube fan at home? Then € 15 might be a better fit. Both options include more than enough mobile data and calling minutes for a first smartphone. If not, you can easily switch plans with every top-up.

Doesn’t your child really call or text the traditional way? Then the Data Only prepaid SIM card is perfect. For € 15 you get 8 GB of data: enough for gaming, watching videos, and chatting on WhatsApp or Snapchat.

If you’d rather get the most out of your budget and skip the manual top-ups, a subscription is the best choice. You’ll get more mobile data and calling minutes for the same price, and with the Viking Clan you both enjoy extra data every month.

Thanks to the Viking advantage, all Vikings in Belgium call and text each other for free (except with Data Only). And through your My Viking account, you stay in full control: track usage, adjust plans, or set limits whenever you want. That way, you always stay informed and in control.
