What is Fiber?

The internet of the future is here: ultra-fast and incredibly stable. Fiber-optic technology transmits data at lightning speed without any loss in quality, even over long distances. That means smooth gaming and streaming, even on multiple devices at the same time.

Traditional copper cables are gradually being replaced by Fiber. And unlike some other providers, we use Proximus technicians to bring the Fiber connection right to the heart of your home.

Is Fiber already available at my address?

Ready for the internet of the future! But is it available in your street yet?

FAQ

Yes, installation is free if self-installation isn’t possible. If you are eligible for self-installation but still prefer a technician to come over, there is a fee of € 59.

Is a Fiber installation free of charge?

Not necessarily. Fiber is usually rolled out zone by zone, and it only becomes available once an entire zone is ready. So even if work is ongoing near your home, it may still take a little while before you can get connected.

There are fiber works happening in my street. Does that mean Fiber is already available to me?

Absolutely! You can easily manage it through your My Viking account.

  • Switching between 'Fiber Fast' and 'Fiber Superfast'? That can be done instantly. Your current modem and boosters will continue to work just fine.

  • Upgrading to 'Megafast' or 'Hyperfast'? A technician will come by to install a new Internet Box+ and ONT Box. Your boosters will be replaced with Wi-Fi Boosters+.

In both cases, you only pay for what you use, thanks to automatic pro-rata billing.

I already have Fiber from Mobile Vikings, can I switch plans?

A VDSL connection, which largely relies on copper cables, has several disadvantages that Fiber does not:

  • The longer the copper cable, the higher the resistance. Lower resistance means higher capacity and faster speeds.

  • Copper cables are vulnerable to external factors like moisture and interference, which can cause the network to age quickly.

  • When many users share the same local part of the copper network at the same time (e.g. during peak hours), internet speeds can be affected.

  • Copper cables have a limited capacity and are not future-proof.

  • Due to wear and tear or ageing, copper cables can degrade over time, impacting signal quality and bandwidth.

It’s important to note that VDSL will be phased out in the future and will no longer be used.

What’s the difference between Fiber and VDSL?

For an existing house

A fiber cable is laid from the street to your home. A contractor will come and install it. Then a technician will extend the fiber optic cable further into your home and install the fiber socket. And that's it! ;)

For an apartment

You can also opt for Fiber in an apartment building. First, your syndic must get permission from the owner to install Fiber in the common parts of the building. As soon as there is Fiber installed there, you can order your own fiber subscription. Once your appointment is made, someone will come by to install Fiber in your apartment. After the installation is complete, the installer will check that everything is working at light speed.

For new construction

Even in new construction houses or apartments, a fiber cable must be laid from the street to inside the house/apartment.In this case, the process is the same as for an already existing home.

Check our Fiber offer.

How does a Fiber installation work?

Yes, to use Hyperspeed internet, you'll need an Internet Box+ modem and an ONT Box. The new modem will be connected to the fiber network via the ONT Box. A technician will visit your home to carry out the installation. Your current Wi-Fi boosters will also be replaced with brand-new Wi-Fi Boosters+.

Do I need a new modem and/or boosters to use Hyperfast internet?
